Incredible transformation into one of the biggest hotels in Sitges, Barcelone

The "before" picture will surprise you

The historic Hotel Terramar in Sitges was built in the 1930s with an original Belle Époque structure.

At that time, when travel was only available to the most privileged, Terramar was an exclusive hotel for the wealthy.

The establishment, with its large gardens and glamorous halls, was worthy of the elegance and refinement of the period.

However, in the 1960s, rising wages, shorter working hours and the arrival of the automobile made many families' dream of spending their holidays by the sea come true.

Travel started to become accessible to all pockets, and the tourist boom arrived.

In response to the mass tourism that invaded the coast, the hotel was extended and renovated, converted into a huge building, which was unrecognisable when compared to the previous design.

This was how it looked in those days.

And this is how it looks after the last renovation.

Quite a change, isn't it?

In this latest integral reform, Isern architecture studio has transformed the hotel, adapting it to the 21st century whilst bringing back the elegance and splendour of other periods.

To achieve this, they have chosen our copings, which you can see fitted on the walls of the terraces.

"ULMA is a benchmark for the versatility of the product. The moldability of polymer concrete makes it very easy to find a solution to almost any element. “

Daniel Isern, the architect who designed the project, told us that he has been using our precast products for over 20 years, especially customised solutions in renovations: "ULMA is a benchmark for the versatility of the product. The moldability of polymer concrete makes it very easy to find a solution to almost any element. “

For this particular case at the Terramar Hotel, Daniel has chosen a standard coping:

"In this case, we used a standard product for a curved project, with great value for money. The white colour of the piece combined perfectly with the single-layer mortar, which enabled us to make the building look like a white boat moored on the beach. In addition, I would highlight its very discreet profile, and how beautiful and smooth the coping is when you touch it. For the level of finish, the texture is fantastic."

These copings serve as a finishing piece to protect the wall from filtrations. However, they also achieve an aesthetic finish that adapts to new architectural trends.

As the Hotel Terramar is located on the beachfront, the quality of the materials was an extremely important aspect, due to the fact they deteriorate more easily in saline environments.

For this reason, the architect Daniel Isern and his team chose ULMA's copings for the project, which guarantee excellent durability due to the material used to make them: polymer concrete.

In the words of Daniel Isern, "We needed a system that would guarantee no defects in the future. Any other material on the seafront would give us problems".

In total, 1900 linear metres of MB22 coping and 130 linear metres of L22 window sills have been supplied.
