Efficient drainage for a shopping centre in Brazil
Shopping Bourbon Carlos Gomes, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, is a mixed-use development that combines retail spaces with a corporate tower, where every construction element was designed to work as part of a cohesive whole.
Within this context, the drainage solutions play a key role not only in ensuring the complex functions efficiently but also in integrating seamlessly with the project’s architectural design.

The challenge: efficient drainage for high-end architecture
The project presented a twofold challenge: ensuring efficient drainage across the different areas of the complex while preserving the aesthetics of a carefully designed architectural concept.
In pedestrian areas, the requirement was clear: to deliver discreet drainage that maintained clean, uncluttered spaces without compromising hydraulic performance.
On access ramps and traffic areas, the challenge was to guarantee high mechanical resistance, user comfort and long-term durability, while preventing noise or unwanted movement in the gratings.
In addition, several areas of the project had construction constraints, including height restrictions, requiring solutions capable of adapting to these conditions without compromising hydraulic capacity.
The solution: systems tailored to every requirement
Different ULMA drainage solutions were installed according to the specific needs of each area of the project:
• EUROSELFV+ channels with slot drainage in pedestrian access areas, providing a discreet solution fully integrated into the design.
• S200F channels on access ramps to car parks and loading bays, designed to withstand greater mechanical demands.
• EUROSELFV+ channels with cast iron grating at vehicle access points to the UMA Corporate commercial tower, combining durability with ease of maintenance.
Performance, comfort and aesthetics
The installed solutions respond precisely to the requirements of each space within the shopping centre:
- Efficient drainage with high hydraulic capacity
- Seamless aesthetic integration through the concealed drainage system
- High resistance in heavy-traffic areas
- Greater user comfort thanks to the grating locking screw
- Easy maintenance in high-use areas
ULMA was chosen for this project due to factors such as the quality of the material used – polymer concrete – the high standard of finish, the possibility of integrating concealed drainage solutions and the durability of the systems in heavy-traffic areas.
In addition to the drainage solutions, the project also incorporates an ULMA ventilated facade system, further reinforcing the architectural identity of the complex.
